The Women Along the River

Today, we talked about the role of women in HUCK FINN. Which female character in the novel did you find most interesting? Why? Give a quote or passage that inspired your interest in this character. Finally, reflect on how Twain has used the character in the novel. (This post closes at midnight on August 10th.)

The most interesting female was the woman Huck met on the way to the side of the Illinois. Huck knew most of the people in St. Petersburg, but the woman had only been there for two days. She realized Huck was not a girl and used many tactics to prove that Huck was truly a boy. The lady asked Huck what his name was, and he claimed it was Sarah Williams. Later, when she was having a conversation with Huck, she asked him to tell her his name again. Huck said Mary instead of Sarah, but he quickly corrected himself as Sarah Mary Williams. She also made Huck thread a needle and throw a piece of lead at a rat. She saw that Huck was really not a girl, and she made him confess about whom he was and why he was dressed as a girl. Huck came up with a story about him living on a farm, so she quizzed him on farm facts. She said, "Say- when a cow's laying down, which end of her gets up first? Answer up prompt, now- don't stop to study over it. Which end gets up first?" Huck then replies, "The hind end, mum." The lady is wise enough to ask Huck questions about the farm, so she knows that his story is true. She also tells Huck, "... don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it... but a man always does t'other way." She stood out from the other women because she was not as passive; she found the truth through manipulating Huck.
