Gregor seems like he may have been bug-like before his transformation because he was a traveling salesman, and many people consider traveling salesmen to be pests just like bugs.

Gregor was like a "bug" because he was always "on the run." As Bex said, he was a traveling salesman and people do not enjoy their presence. Also, he moves by train to do his business; many insects use a host to travel.

Just as a parasitic bug drains its host in order to live, Gregor made his living literally at other’s expense—as a traveling salesman, he only earned money if his customers gave him theirs. Also, for his work, Gregor crossed the countryside daily and never seemed to settle in one place; likewise, many bugs are constantly on the move to avoid predators. Therefore, Gregor was like a bug before his transformation because he was a traveling salesman.

As a traveling salesman, Gregor lacked the figurative "backbone" to stand in support of his own dreams and aspirations. Thus, he had to tirelessly work for a boss that showed absolutely no appreciation in order to pay his parents' debt. As an insect, Gregor is physically spineless because insects are invertebrates.
