Which way is a boy to go?

Chapters 1-10 of HUCK FINN focus on Huck's escapes from two very different lifestyles. How do Pap and the Widow Douglas represent two opposing lifestyles for Huck and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? If you were a judge and had to place Huck in one of these two homes, which would you select? Why? (Extra credit stops a midnight on June 27.) (When you answer this question, remember conclude with only your first name and last initial.)

Huck’s lifestyle with Pap and Widow Douglas vary drastically. Pap is almost always drunk. He beats Huck and locks him in the house the majority of the time. However, life is not as strict as it is with Widow Douglas. Widow Douglas is a very wealthy, proper woman. She is constantly trying to instill strong religious values in Huck. She also makes him go to school. Although she is very strict, she is at least kind to Huck and does not abuse him. If I were to chose between the two, I would choose to live with Widow Douglas. Her home is far nicer, and although she is mildly controlling, she treats Huck respectfully. Brittney N.

Huck's life with Pap includes the disadvantages of verbal and physical abuse, a poor fatherly image, and disapproval of education. An advantage of the lifestyle of Pap is independence, unlike the many rules Widow Douglas enforced upon Huck. Advantages of a life with Widow Douglas include obedience, education, and a proper caretaker. Huck is quite disobedience, and Widow Douglas is patience and forgiving in hope to correct Huck of his bad habits. The home of Widow Douglas is the better choice for these reasons. Although Huck craves independence, by living with Widow Douglas, Huck learned to read and was introduced to a godly figure. A life with Pap caused Huck to get lonely and restless. He also received undeserved punishment for what most people would consider respectable, which in turn caused him to run away to live a life on his own. Victoria N.
