Summer Blog # 6: "You can write down anything you need to ask me..."

A great portion of the end on the book is Jefferson's notebook/diary. Grant gave him the notebook so that he could write down his thoughts and feelings; it becomes, however, a chronicle of Jefferson's metamorphosis. Select a passage from the notebook and cite it and then explain how this passage helped you to recognize a change within Jefferson. Also, include how the notebook section made you feel. (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, June 28, 2011.)

In chapter 29 on page 231 the last paragraph is Jefferson writing about the last time he is able to sit down with his godmother he says how he said that he loved her and he let her hold him because this is how he can show that he has changed. He wrote how he told her that he was strong and how she didn't need to go back to the jail because she knew he was strong. The author put happiness in the passage by showing how Jefferson is now a strong man. However there is also sadness in it because this is the last time that Jefferson can sit down with his godmother.

In the second entry on page 230, Jefferson expresses his gratitude to Mr. Wiggins. He tells Mr. Wiggins hat no one had ever made him feel like something before. This reveals that Jefferson is truly a man because he is able to appreciate something a person does for him. I found this to be a very sweet passage. Throughout the novel, turning Jefferson into a man seemed to be a hopeless cause, but at this point, what everyone set out to do was accomplished, and hope was restored.

The second entrey on page 229, when Jefferson is asking if it's love when he wants to see his godmother. He says that he hopes to see his godmother one more time on this earth. This passage reveals that Jefferson does love his godmother, and he wants to treat her better because she is getting sick. The notebook section made me feel very sad for Jefferson. I did not want him to get executed, especially now that I am finally saw what he really feels and thinks.

The third entry on page 228 expresses how Jefferson really does like Mr. Wiggins coming to the jail and talking to him. Jefferson explains how he likes Mr. Wiggins, but he does not know how to tell him because he has never told anyone before and no one has said it to him either. This passages really shows how Mr. Wiggins has affected Jefferson in many ways. It mainly shows how he really does care about people. I think this passage is sad because Jefferson mentions how no one has ever told him that they like him.
