In chapter 5 at the night assembly, Ralph makes the comment "that the rules are all we have got." How important are rules? Why do rules have so much power over us both positively and negatively? Which rules are most important in life? Why? (The deadline to post a comment on this question is midnight Saturday, October 29, 2011.)

Rules are extremely important in life. They govern our decisions of what is socially right and wrong, and most people are afraid of suffering consequences, which leads to a majority of the rules being followed. However, others don't like being controlled, and they feel as though the rules must be broken in order to feel free. The most important rules in society are the ones that govern acts of violence. If these were not in place, even more people would be dying and getting hurt daily. There would be nothing to protect the little people.
Rules are one of the most powerful influences in our lives. They guide us to act well and kindly , or at least civilly to our fellow men. The law carries punishments to those who defy it, causing even those who woud not cooperate to do so because they follow the will of the masses. Laws are what keeps humans acting like humans, rather than degrading into savage beasts . . . which now that I think about it was probably the whole point of this blog.
