Looking for a hero

It seems all societies, no matter how ancient, have sought heroes. Define a hero. Which hero--the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf or the Medieval Sir Gawain--did you find most heroic by your definition? Why? (The deadline to post a response to this blog question is midnight Saturday, February 23, 2013.)

A hero is classified as a man of distinguished courage or ability that is admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. In ancient medieval times, Beowulf and Sir Gawain were very similar but different characters. I would favor more with Sir Gawain for his humble and adventuresome characteristic. He went to fight knowing he was not fit and capable but with his skills and knowledge he led in defeat. While Beowulf was depicted as a fictional and arrogant human being, Sir Gawain was depicted as more human and simple. For that, I can relate more to Sir Gawain.

Throughout history, heroes have been key symbols in every era. Heroes are men who have the bravery and strength, mentally and physically, to fight for the sake of others. In this remark, Beowulf is much more of a hero than Sir Gawain the Good. Beowulf never faltered when given a challenge. Later, he fought a dragon not for gold and glory but to protect his people. Although Sir Gawain was brave and had ideals, Gawain fought to keep his honor and was led astray in his quest. With this in consideration, Beowulf better portrays a heroic character to me.

A hero is someone who shows great courage and bravery. He does what is right no matter how hard it is and helps people he doesn't know. I believe the Medieval Sir Gawain is more of a hero than Beowulf. Although Sir Gawain did take the ribbon, he eventually realizes that it was wrong and asked for forgiveness. He is also brave enough to have his head chopped off for his King. Sir Gawian is a true hero.

A hero is someone who is brave, loyal, and always does the right thing in the end. A hero also does not brag about his accomplishments. According to this definition, Sir Gawain is more of a hero than Beowulf. Even though Beowulf is a hero, he constantly brags about the things he has done, and at one point he fights for the glory and the gold. Sir Gawain keeps his promise that he made to the Green King and goes in search for him. Even though at one point he breaks his promise to the king, at the en he confesses and asks for forgiveness. Sir Gawain is loyal by keeping his promise, brave by allowing the king to give him a blow, and does the right thing by confessing.
