Fall Through the Air
Chapter 11, entitled "Castle Rock, " brings us to a very tragic moment in the novel: Piggy's death. Why do you think Golding has Piggy murdered at Castle Rock? What is he saying about the archetype that Piggy represents in the novel? What is he saying about Roger? (The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight, Tuesday, April 30, 2013. I believe that Golding murders Piggy at Castle Rock because Jack foreshadows the death when he says that it would be easy to use a palm tree to send rocks down. Also he kills Piggy here because it is Jack's side of the island. The murder shows that Roger is even more violent and evil than Jack. Piggy represents the outcast in Lord of the Flies and his murder shows how badly the boys viewed him. His archetype is typically victimized in stories and his fate followed this pattern.
Golding murders Piggy at Castle Rock because Jack foreshadow having a death there. Castle Rock is Jack's uncivilized part of the island. Piggy is often used as a scapegoat and this is seen through his death. Piggy is used as the scapegoat for all the hatred and savagery in the boys. Golding is saying that Roger is heartless. Roger represents the darkness of every humans soul. Roger is like the devil and is truly evil.
Piggy is murdered in Castle Rick because if is Jack's territory, and it is easy to kill him with the rock there. Golding is showing that Piggy is the outcast. This is proven because the boys always pick on him and because he disappears by being murdered. Golding is also showing that Roger is the villain who murdered Piggy and is full of evil.
Piggy is murdered ar Castle Rock because he is not like the other boys. Since it is Jack's part of the island, it shows that Piggy is not wanted by the other boys. Piggy's archetype is an outcast, and throughout the novel, this is shown especially by his murder. He is trying to work things out, yet no one wants to listen to him, so Roger removes the boulder, which kills Piggy. This shows that Roger is under Jack's command and completely uncivilized.
