What's for dinner, Poppa Swift?

Jonathan Swift surely knows how to point out our foibles as a society.  Finish reading the selection, which is on page 502 of your at home literature books, and comment on one of the justifications that Swift utilizes to defend his "Modest Proposal".  Explain how this statement hits readers hard and makes us see that we must act.  (Deadline to post a response is midnight, Friday, August 16, 2013.) PS:  Don't think for a moment that I won't take this picture of my grandbaby when he/she finally arrives.

I found the paragraph where Swift discusses how using children as food would affect relations between parents and their offspring. Swift states, "It would increase the care and tenderness of mothers towards their children..." as well as, "Men would become... fond of their wives... [and would no longer] beat or kick [their wives] for fear of a miscarriage." Both of these statements are strikingly true. The value of children that were permitted to survive would be significantly higher and Men would be more careful around pregnant women for fear of damaging the child to be sold. These horrifying truths force the reader to consider the cruelty of the current situations and how it is little to no better than eating other human beings and such a strong call to action is difficult to ignore.
