Just across the bay
Based on the first two chapters of the book, what are your initial thoughts on one of the following characters: Nick, Tom, Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle? Why? Do not base you thoughts on having seen the movie--approach this from the book view only. CATCH: You may not write on the same character as the two people who post previously to you. Tom is very different in the book compared to the movie. In the book, he is pictured as aggressive and he moves people to do what he wants. I never really saw this of Tom until we started the book. He is haughty, arrogant, racist, and a cheater. He is also violent, especially at the end of chapter two. Its an obvious difference from the book to the movie because he actually breaks Myrtle's nose with his open hand! I do not like Tom and honestly, I want to punch him in the face.
Daisy appears as a very ditsy girl who makes other very intrigued by her. She does realize that Tom is cheating on her, but she chooses to play it off and pretend like it isn't too big of a deal. She has to be strong in order to survive under the circumstances she is living in, and she does well in finding joy, or pretending to find joy, in small things, such as visitors or sunsets.

Nick was a very interesting character to me. He was extremely unbiased and seemed relatively nice as a person. His unbiased characteristic made him the perfect narrator f the book. He also seemed very understanding when it came to other people as well as compassionate. I believe he'd do anything for someone he cared about. I just wish he was more outspoken about things that aren't right. His sarcasm makes him an enjoyable character to read even though it is rather faint. I enjoy reading Nick's perspective.--AR 1st
I like Jordan. She seems like a girl that knows what she wants and does not need a man to make her complete. She was very springy and would say whatever she wants. When she talks to Nick she talks to him with a sense of authority which is a complete contrast to Myrtle. I really admire her strength. Knowing that she was pioneering into the male dominated golf world is inspiring! I really enjoy the small bits she has added to the book so far.
Daisy feels and knows that she is deeply unhappy with her marriage, but her normal behavior, especially around her guests, seems designed to stress her happiness. Instead of leaving Tom(having quite enough money to do so), she lives in a dreamworld where she has a perfectly happy married life.
My initial thoughts on Myrtle are that she is an untruthful woman who is covering up her affair with Tom as well as her unhappiness in her marriage and life. Myrtle wants and dreams for a life filled with richness. In an attempt to attain this, she begins to have relations with Tom, the rich man. The way the apartment is filled with fine artwork and gaudy furniture shows how Myrtle longs for this rich lifestyle. However, secretly seeing a rich man and filling an apartment with “luxurious” furniture does not fulfill Myrtle’s desirable rich life but rather serves as artificial pleasures. To me, Myrtle seems very superficial.
