This belongs to us....
As Ralph looks down from the top of the bastion of the island, he exclaims, "This belongs to us!" Much like an explorer discovering a new land, Ralph has found himself in charge of a new world--an island of boys. What advice would you give Ralph to keep in mind as he is chief? What is the main thing he must do? Why? (The deadline to post a response is midnight, Thursday, April 24, 2014.)

I would remind Ralph not to let the power get to him. He needs to remember that although he is chief, he is still part of the team and he must respect and help the others like the team that they are. If he does not show respect for the other boys, they will also lose respect for him and grow to strongly dislike him. That is the main thing to do to keep them all alive. He must also not get TOO playful, as he sometimes does. For him to be a good chief he must keep in mind the danger that they are in and not turn their situation into a game.
I would tell Ralph that boys will be boys and that there are all sorts of different people. He needs to learn that control and power are delicate instruments that he should not misuse. I would tell him to be a fair leader and not let Piggy or any of the other boys feel victimized, threatened, or belittled. He must not get carried away. After all, he is only a boy, but he is in a position of power and with great power comes great responsibility.
