The Shell and the Glasses

At the end of Chapter 10, Jack and his savages raid the other boys. What does Piggy believe Jack wants? What does this symbolize or reflect about Piggy's views? What, however, does Jack want? How does this reflect his views? What is Golding saying through this raid about the microcosm of the island? Piggy thought Jack had come for the conch and this reflects his belief that Jack is overcome with his new-found power. However, Jack really wanted Piggy's glasses to cook the meat, which reflects his desires to hunt, play, and cook the meat. Golding is saying that no matter who believes what, no matter the space or differences in views, these kids cannot escape each other. They are part of the same world, and have to interact, even if it is violently, to create the microcosm.
