I think that Macbeth deserves to be haunted by Banquo's ghost. Yes, he was somewhat manipulated by his wife and The Weird Sisters, but he allowed himself to fall for their manipulation. Also, he greedily killed the good King Duncan just so he could become king as if two titles weren't enough. Then he selfishly kills Banquo, his best friend, to protect himself from the mess he has gotten himself into because he has allowed himself to be manipulated by his wife and The Weird Sisters.

I believe that it could go both ways. If it was Duncan's ghost, it would be because of the manipulations of the the weird sisters and his wife. With Banquo's ghost, it has nothing to do with his wife or the witches. He's taking matters into his own hands for his destiny. He killed his best friend because he feared him and didn't want him having any more children that could become kings. He wanted Fleance dead too, but he was able to flee. He's done everything to either protect himself or get something he wanted.

I believe that Macbeth deserved his fear and paranoia because of the fact he chose to fall under the control of his wife and the witches. As the old saying goes "what goes around comes around." Because he chose to listen to Lady Macbeth and the witches, he killed his king and his friend Banquo. These constant tragedies, one after another, caused a stress on his brain which could lead to his apparitions and paranoia.
