WELCOME STUDENTS!

This is a place for us to discuss openly and honestly the literature we are reading. Here we are all just communicating our thoughts on what we are reading. There are no right and wrong answers. However, you are expected to be polite, mature, and on topic.

In the beginning...

The epic Beowulf, created in Anglo-Saxon England, begins a long tradition of English writers approaching the theme of good versus evil. Which scene from the epic did you find especially focused upon this theme and what in particular exemplifies this quest? (This post closes at midnight on August 29, 2013).

The Journey to Manhood

We have discussed how HUCK FINN is a Bildungsroman (a work of fiction in which the main character encounters a series of events that help him to change his views and grow as a person).  A LESSON BEFORE DYING can be considered as such as well.  Select two quotes that show the progress of Grant developing into a man.  Explain how the conflict within him is changed in/through these events.  You may not post the same quotes/events as the posters prior to you.  (The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight, Tuesday, August 20, 2013.)

What's for dinner, Poppa Swift?

Jonathan Swift surely knows how to point out our foibles as a society.  Finish reading the selection, which is on page 502 of your at home literature books, and comment on one of the justifications that Swift utilizes to defend his "Modest Proposal".  Explain how this statement hits readers hard and makes us see that we must act.  (Deadline to post a response is midnight, Friday, August 16, 2013.) PS:  Don't think for a moment that I won't take this picture of my grandbaby when he/she finally arrives.
