Fall of Society
In chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies, Ralph asks Piggy, "What causes things to break up like they do?" What are two principle reasons the society on the island has started to break up? How does this reflect real society? What do you think is the main cause of problems in our society? How could this be corrected? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight Thursday, October 31, 2013.)

Because the boys split into two factions, that has caused society on the island to become less progressive and break apart. The boys split up because Jack decided that things were not going his way so he would leave. Another reason is the fact that they are digressing. Most of the boys do not have respect for the rules, and they are starting to act like blood-thirsty animals. Without order and compromise in society, nothing much is accomplished. The main cause of this problem is people’s egos and thinking that they are too good for rules so they must be exempt from laws. If people humbled themselves, followed the rules that they had a part in setting, and listened to other’s ideas and compromised, life would run more smoothly.
The main reasons why society on the island is splitting up is because the boys do not try to agree on things and they do not follow the law. Jack thinks hunting is more important than the fire, which Ralph says is important. They will not try to solve their conflicts. Also, most of the boys do not want to follow the rules that Ralph has put in place. This is just like the real society. The government can never really come up with a solution to many problems because they are not willing to have an open mind and try to agree. Society also has rules that many people refuse to follow simple because they want to be the leader and have things their way. The main problem in society is agreement. No one will agree with the other. Constant arguments occur in most situations and no one will listen to what the other has to say. There is not a sure way to fix this problem. However, if people listened and considered others' opinions, the world would be a better place.
