Infirm of Purpose...

In Act Two of Macbeth, the murder of Duncan occurs.  So much is revealed about the true characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in this act as they react to the murder of Duncan.  What do we learn of Macbeth through his words and actions in this situation?  of Lady Macbeth?  Which of these two characters are you finding most interesting? Why?  (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Wednesday, March 26, 2014.)

Through Macbeth's actions and speech in Act II, many things are revealed about Macbeth and his wife. Of course, Macbeth is obviously at war with himself about killing Duncan. He knows that killing a good king, and even a king at all, is wrong. He does not want to kill him. After killing Duncan, he severely regrets what he has done, especially when he hears the knocking. On the flip side, Lady Macbeth shows a cool and contempt side of her personality. As formally introduced in her character, Lady Macbeth is ruthless and manipulative, but when she sees Duncan sleeping, she cannot bring herself to kill him because he looks like her father. This shows a weakness in her exterior hardness of character and this scene is used to foil Lady Macbeth and Duncan. Out of the two, I would have to say Lady Macbeth is my favorite. She has so much in her character that makes her evil, but an interesting evil. She fascinating as a character and I look forward to tracking her for my poster and revealing more about her character.
