It is possible for Hester and Dimmesdale to leave the past behind them and make a new life for themselves. While Dimmesdale is tied down by his career, if he really loves Hester he should be willing to leave his position in the church. Hester's only responsibility is Pearl, and she will be going with them. The only thing that will hold them back is Dimmesdale's cowardice. If Dimmesdale is really in love with Hester then he should be able to get over his cowardice.

It is possible for Hester and Dimmesdale to leave the past behind and begin a new life. It has been proven through the entire book so far that they are madly in love. Sadly, Dimmesdale thinks his job is in the way. He thinks he can't leave. However, I agree with Tiffany. If Dimmesdale really loves her, he will forget his worries and move on with his life. I think Dimmesdale loves her. Hester is already in enough trouble with the public so running away is not really a problem. She is escaping too. I think they should leave the past behind and love each other forever.

For Hester and Dimmesdale, anything is possible. They are capable of leaving the past behind them and making a new life for their family. The emotions, actions, and thoughts of both Hester and Dimmesdale prove it possible. Hester loves the reverend just as much as she did when the "adultery" was committed. Though she knows Dimmesdale to be a coward, she sees the suffering he himself and Roger Chillingworth inflicted. This only makes her love him more. She is the one who proposes that they run away together, the three of them: Dimmesdale, Hester, and little Pearl. But the reverend has something holding him back that Hester does not; that is his job. Not only does Dimmesdale love Hester, he loves his job and his family in the church. Like Dimmesdale did for Hester, his job as a clergymen roots him to the area which he cannot leave. He feels an obligation to both his church and Hester; he is torn. Any person can overcome their past and create a new future; it just depends on the strength of the person. Hester and Father Dimmesdale are more than strong enough to acheive such a task. Thus far, they have managed to conceal their love for one another from the public, something no weak person can do. No doubt can they flee from the Puritan village and finally be able to love each other, honestly. Though, the decision lies with Dimmesdale.

I do not believe it is possible for Hester and Dimmesdale to leave the past behind them while creating a new life. I think that their problems will still weigh heavy on their hearts because their whole new lives will be based on lies. By running away they can go on without people knowing of their sins but people in a new town will become suspicious of their new inhabitants, which will make the pain of their sin even worse. While remaining in the town, Hester is able to openly be seen as a sinner, which has proved to bear a burden on her but also a sense of relief for her. I do not believe this is a matter of only love but also of the future personal detriment the two may cause themselves. Also, if they bring Pearl with them who is to say she will not be the one to reveal the wrong her parents have done?
