Life as the leader...

As Ralph looks down from the top of the bastion of the island in Chapter One,  he exclaims, "This belongs to us!" Much like an explorer discovering a new land, Ralph has found himself in charge of a new world--an island of boys. Select a situation that you feel Ralph has handled well as a leader and a situation that he has not done well.  Explain them and why you feel each is either a job well done or a job that needs improvement. What advice would you give Ralph to keep in mind as he is chief? What is the main thing he must do? Why? (The deadline to post a response is midnight, Sunday, October 20, 2013.)

I think that Ralph has done a good job at making surenthat everyone gets what they need. He is working hard at making a shelter for everyone because it is one if the most important things that they will need. He has done poorly at keeping control of everyone. Only him and Simon are working on the shelter while everyone else is having fun and doing whatever they want. Ralph needs to Take control. I would tell Ralph that He needs to keep in mind that everyone needs to get off the island/ be rescued. I would also tell him that he has to make sure that everyone is pulling their weight, not for the sake of everyonr but for the sake of himself. The main thing that Ralph must do is survive. He needs to find whatever food, water, shelter, and clothing for particular seasons are available in order to survive and keep everyone safe. These are the main things that he should worry about because they mean the difference between life and death.

Establishing order was his first act as leader. Allowing only the person with the conch to talk was a great way to make sure people were quiet while other people were talking. It is too bad that that did not last for long. Being rude to Piggy and allowing Jack to be rude to Piggy was a mistake. Piggy is the only boy on the island who could actually increase the chances of them getting off of the island. Undermining him because of his appearance and inability to do physical work was not only mean but also a bad strategy for the sake of everyone’s survival. Therefore, the advice I would give Ralph is to listen to everyone, especially Piggy. Also, he should not let Jack overpower him and make sure the little ones understand the situation and help out the most that they can. The main thing he must do as leader is keep order so that everyone has what they need to survive and to increase the chances of survival.

I agree with Hannah that using the conch was a sign that Ralph is a good leader. The conch allowed a person to speak and share their ideas so their opinion would be heard among all the voices. The conch is an effective tool for the most part. I do believe one situation where Ralph failed as a leader would be when they are trying to build a fire on top of the mountain. It seemed like a good idea to him, but he didn't think it all the way through and good leaders need to be able to think things through. If it weren't for Jack suggesting to use Piggy's glasses, they probably wouldn't have had fire. Ralph is doing a good job as a leader overall, but the advice I would give him would be to think things through, keep control and don't let others overpower him. The main mission is to survive so they can be rescued. Once Ralph does these things, they can beat the island!
