Rules to the left, rules to the right...

In chapter 5, when Jack and Ralph argue, Ralph says, "The rules are all we've got!" How important are rules in society? What rules are needed in this microcosm if the boys are to survive? Why? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.)

Rules create boundaries. Without rules, leaders have nothing to enforce to keep people in order. Nothing is accomplished when every person is acting wildly, so rules are pretty important in society, as long as there is someone or something there to enforce them. The most important rule that the boys need is keeping the fire going. This is their only way to signal adults on boats or in planes that they are alive and need rescuing. In the meantime, they need to have good hygiene. If they go to the bathroom wherever they want, they will contaminate their food source, and they will not have anything to eat. Additionally, they all need to do their share of work doing what they can to make shelters, to collect food and water, and to keep the fire going. Another rule they need to follow is respecting the conch at assemblies. If they cannot work together, then nothing will be accomplished towards their survival. Following these rules will increase their chances of survival.

Rules are extremely important to society. Without them, there would be chaos everywhere. Killing, robbing, and many other crimes would take place without any consequences. I think that the boys really do need rules. The most important rule is to do whatever will keep them alive and get them off the island. Like Hannah said, keeping the fire going is really important. Also, doing what will keep them alive, such as food, water, shelter, and agreement is very important for them. Without this, it would be extremely hard for the boys to stay alive.
