A "Spoon"ful of Poetry

Today, we began our journey through the cemetery of Spoon River.  Which of the many epitaphs that we read (including those on the video)did you enjoy most and why? Give a line from the poem that really drew you in.  Tell why or how this line affected you.  (The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight, Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014).

One of the entries of the Spoon River Anthology that I thoroughly enjoyed was the epitaph of Elsa Wertman. her epitaph showed a full story filled with romance, scandal, bitterness, and lament. In just a few lines I became so allured to this work of literature. Line that first drew me in was "He stole into the kitchen and took me 5
Right in his arms and kissed me on my throat." This was a sudden turns of events that contrasted with the beginning where she talks about her being a simple German woman. Another line that I particularly enjoyed was the last line, "That's my son! That's my son!" It reveals the tone of this piece the best to me by showing the sadness and regret that Mrs. Wertman held. To make this story even better, it was tied to other epitaphs like Mr. Greene. I always like a good scandal movie, and this short epitaph provided me with all the drama that one tomb stone could handle. I loved it!
