The bas#$@% son of a bas#$@%

Mr. Wingfield is not a character in the play; he has not one speaking line, yet he posseses so much power and control over the lives of his wife and children.  Select either Tom, Amanda, or Laura and explain how this character's life is haunted by Mr. Wingfield.  Give specific lines to prove your statement.  CATCH:  You may not comment on the same character as the person before you and you can not say the same thing anyone else has offered.  (The deadline to post a response to this blog is Sunday, November 23, 2014.)

I believe Tom was influenced most strongly by his father, Mr. Wingfield. I think he looked up to his father and saw him as a model to construct his own personality. . Tom as a result from looking up to his father so much, ends up being exactly like the person he admires. Tom and his father have such similar qualities that the mother even states to him, “You’re acting more and more like him!” For instance, he wants to travel like his father did as indicated when Amanda exclaims, “I saw your letter from the Merchant Marine.” He is also seemingly restless living the life of a normal common man, a trait which caused his father to leave. Tom later leaves at the expense of his family and remarks that it is his own selfish needs in the end. Mr. Wingfield also did the same thing and may have passed this trait onto Tom unknowingly. In the end, however, like his father before him, Tom’s personality traits end up bringing the family down into a state of despair.
