WELCOME STUDENTS!

This is a place for us to discuss openly and honestly the literature we are reading. Here we are all just communicating our thoughts on what we are reading. There are no right and wrong answers. However, you are expected to be polite, mature, and on topic.

You are what you read...

There is an old adage that states, "You are what you eat." I believe that people are WHAT they read because once you read a poem, a story, a play, or a novel, it becomes a part of your thoughts and if you are lucky enough to find something that touches you emotionally, it becomes a part of your soul. We have read so much this semester. Which pieces will be a part of you forever? Why? How did these pieces affect you? (This is our last blog for this semester; the deadline to post is midnight Monday, December 12, 2011.)

I will remember The Scarlet Letter the most because it opened my eyes to how I look at people and myself. Nathaniel Hawthorne, through The Scarlet Letter, reminded me of how people judge others and because of mistakes, which taught me that I do the same thing sometimes.

I think that Macbeth will be a part of me forever, becasue of the beauty of Shakespeare's language and the deviousness of the witches. Also, I think that A Lesson before dying will stay with me because of its messages, that it is not how you lived, but how you die, that is important, and also that no death is anything but horrible.

I will always remember Lord of The Flies because it shows that deep down all people still have primal instincts and rules are a vital part of everyday life. Without rules all heck breaks loose and society eventually breaks down into nothing. It showed me that no matter how dumb I think a rule is it is necessary to keep order.

Macbeth will definitely be a part of me forever. I have always loved Shakespeare and by reading Macbeth, I have added one more piece of knowledge about him to myself. I plan to pursue theatre as my minor in college and the background and experience of Macbeth will be a useful tool later in life. In addition, I enjoyed it very much. It allowed me to see how people can not simply judge other by their appearances. Reality and appearance are rarely equal.

I read A Streetcare Named Desire last year for summer reading, and since then, it has remained a part of me. Appearance is a central theme throughout the novel. Blanche is constantly obsessing about her appearance by bathing and worrying about how she is aging. In fact, she is so obsessed with her appearnace that she lies to others about her age and creats her own fantacy world. Through the theme of appearance, Williams reveals that a person cannot hide who he or she really is. Williams also shows that looks are not the most imporant factor in life, but rather, what is important is what is inside of a person's heart. Another one of my favorite lessons is that Williams teaches a person cannot escape reality. The characters in the novel often choose drinking as a form of escape; however, they are never able to truly escape reality because their problems come back in the end.

I believe my group novel Their Eyes Were Watching God will remain in my heart forever. Although the story line was not all that interesting, it had a life-changing message. I read this book during a dificult time in my life and it definitely shed some light on my current situation. It taught me that I needed to make my own happiness and that would only be possible if I took my life into my own hands and truly lived. I learned a great about happiness, life, and love which I think will remain with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for assigning me this book Mrs. Palombo :)
