A Sign from the Outside World

At the end of Chapter 5, Ralph wishes for a sign from the outside world and it comes at the beginning of Chapter 6-- dead paratrooper. If you are the first person to answer this blog, explain the irony of this situation.  If you are the second person to answer focus on these questions: Confused in the dark, Samneric believe it to be the "beastie" they have all been fearing. What does this reveal about the archetype that Samneric represent?  Finally, if you are the third person to blog, here is your topic: Only Simon remains convinced that the beast is mankind. Is Simon right? In what ways are we humans the beasts of society?   Continue to respond in this order.  (The deadline to post a response is midnight, Sunday, April 21, 2013.)

There is a lot of irony in the dead paratrooper arriving on the island. Right after Ralph wishes for help or a sign from a grownup, the paratrooper arrives in the night. The fact that his wish somewhat comes true is amazing, but the fact that the wish is answered with a dead grownup is a bit ironic. Ralph wanted a sign, and well, he got it. Nobody expected for a sign to actually appear, yet the paratrooper did.

In society, there are several people that are always negative and jump to the worst possible conclusion about a particular situation. Samneric could represent this. He is pessimistic about the fact that he believes that there is a beastie on the island. This could be due to the fact that he is so young and is scared easily or it could be his personality. Therefore, Samneric could represent the stereotypical pessimist in society.

Simon is right the beast is mankind. Man takes and damages what is not theirs, like when the man made air plane damaged the untouched island and the boys declared the island theirs. Humans are a dominate animal. Humans seem to have a need to control other animals which creates a beast. People as humans also tend to put their wants in front of their needs, which can also create a beast.

This situation is ironic because Ralph wishes for an adult, and one actually shows up, but he is dead. Also, this adult that Ralph wishes becomes the cause of their problems because when Sam and Eric sees him, they believe that he is the beastie. They cause them boys to go on a hunt. The one thing that Ralph wanted happened, but it caused more harm than good.

Samneric are a archetype of a typical man. When they assume that what they see is the beastie, they are showing that most people jump to conclusions without knowing all of the facts. Also, Samneric describe the beastie as if the truly saw it even though they did not. This reveals that people will come up with lies to help their story. It reveals that man has a tendency to see things as worse than they are. When someone is given a slight indication that something is bad, he automatically believes it is without proof.
