Rules, Rules, Rules

In chapter 5, when Jack and Ralph argue, Ralph says, "The rules are all we've got!" How important are rules in society? What rules are needed in this microcosm if the boys are to survive? Why? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight,Thursday, April 18, 2013.)

Rules are just as important to society as food and water is. With out rules, people would run wild, doing as they feel free, with not consequences. The boys need rules to survive. Rules such as no fighting, no insubordinate actions, and so forth. These rules will, hopefully, allow them to stay focused on being rescued, instead of fighting each other and disobeying Ralph.

A society is defined by the rules it upholds. In the boys' microcosm, their rules are the only thing keeping them attached to society. Without them, they would behave just as animals with no consequences. In order to enforce some structure within the society, the boys need to establish a value of rank. If the other boys respect those in power, they can limit danger, prevent chaos, and establish further rules. Basic rules of humanity need to be taught and enforced such as no hurting, fighting, or bullying. With an established, respected chain of command and a worthy leader, the boys can survive as a small society within their microcosm.

Rules keep organization and order within society. The boys need to set rules that place order. There should be rules of no fighting, everyone participates in surviving, and they all listen to their leader, Ralph. The boys need command and rules will set give that command that keeps organization and order in their society.

Rules are necessary in order for a society to survive. In this situation, though, their society consists of boys under the age of 12. Of course they look at this new land as a adventure opportunity at first, however, later on rules are needed in order to keep in touch with human civilization. Rules allow order to be conducted within a society, and further prevent chaos. In this microcosm there needs to be rules to prevent such things as fighting and also rules to bring the boys together as a team. These young boys will not survive unless they come together and build their way up. For instance, the builders for the shelters constantly decreased leaving Simon and Ralph. Overall, rules will be helpful in building up their new society by conducting order and preventing chaos.

Rules are extremely important in society. Without them, people would just do what they please and would not act in a civilized manner. The boys need rules because they are so young and have never been in a situation without adults to set rules for them. They must be responsible and do as they were taught by there parents even if they are not present. Rules for these boys with keep an orderly lifestyle and prevent them from going wild and possibly putting themselves in danger.

In the South we know what it is like when government and society breaks down. After Katrina, especially in New Orleans, looting was rampent and widespread. When order breaks and chaos unfolds many people will resort to animalistic behavior to survive. Basic rules and authority figures are a means of keeping people organized and in line. The boys need to set restrictions and rules on obviously disruptive and bad behavior. They also need to respect the authority that Ralph has been given as the Chief. Jack needs to understand that their is only one Chief and he needs to quit undermining Ralph's authority. With a plain chain of command the boy's existence on the island will become easier to overcome.

Rules are one of the most important things in society. Without rules, there would be so much crime and violence and there would be no repercussions. The rules are what help people survive and it is what the boys on the island need. They need rules like no fighting, always helping (like building huts and keeping the fire going) and respect. If everyone just listened to each other, instead of fighting, the boys would be able to survive. These boys need to follow these rules to get off the islands. Without rules and discipline, nothing will get done and they will never be rescued.

Rules are important to society because they keep everything running smoothly. Without rules, people could do whatever they please and eventually harm others or even themselves. The boys need rules for these same reasons. They need to protect themselves and each other. By following their leader and the rules of their group, they will be safer than if they have no rules at all.

As Emma said, rules keep order in society. They set certain parameters in order to protect people from immoral actions. The boys need certain rules on the island so that they can be cooperative equals with no single individual fully above the others. The rules are also set in place to aid the boys in their survival. Certain rules include not using the restroom near food sources in order to stay healthy, as well as keeping the fire aflame at all times so that the boys can be rescued by a nearby ship. These rules are necessary because they keep restrict wrongdoings and aid in the attempt to be saved.

Within a society, rules are necessary to not just keep order, but to make people accountable for their actions. For the boys to survive on the island it is important for them to always keep the fire going in order to signal for smoke. It is also extremely important for them to listen to Ralph. Without listening to Ralph, the boys would resort to following their own rules and arguing constantly. Overall, rules are vital to keep the boys focused on the most important task, getting rescued.
